It is common to grow vegetables on the roof for the needs of your home. Nowadays many people are taking interest in terrace gardening. People are also using the little space available on the roof or balcony of their house to grow small and big plants. The main reason for this is the increasing awareness of pure and healthy eating. But, today we are introducing you to a woman who has been doing terrace farming on the terrace of her house for the last 24 years and not gardening and is also earning from it.
Sulafat Moideen, 46, a resident of Edavanakkad village in Ernakulam district in Kerala, is known for farming on the terrace. Many people have taken inspiration from him and started growing vegetables on the roof of their houses. Apart from the common citizens, he has also received a lot of appreciation from the Agriculture Department of Kerala. He has also received the award in the 'Best Terrace Farmer' category of Kerala in the year 2020.
Sulafat Moideen started organic farming on the roof
Sulafat Moideen, who studied only till class 12th, is a successful organic farmer today. , “I started organic farming on the roof about 24 years ago. We also have an acre of land but along with that, I also used my 2000 sq ft terrace. For those who do not have land for cultivation or have less land, the option of cultivating on the roof is the best. However, how big is their roof and whether it can bear the load or not, these things also have to be taken into account.
She told that she does not grow vegetables and vegetables on the terrace only for her home use, but her aim is to take maximum production to the market because agriculture is a means of livelihood for her. Sulfat says that today she has 1000 grow bags and pots on her terrace, in which she harvests fruits, seasonal vegetables, salads, spices etc. In each season, she plants different vegetables which include onion, ginger, turmeric, mint, coriander, maize, onion, fennel etc.
Apart from fruits and vegetables, she also cultivates 'Ajola' which is used as green fodder. He said, “If roof farming is done properly, then a lot of production can be taken. Also, you can do farming without using any harmful chemicals. Because you prepare the soil yourself, you can already add all the essential nutrients to the soil.”
She also mostly tries to compost by herself. He also has a Biogas Plant and Vermicomposting Unit. She makes vermicompost through vermicompost bed . She explains that the biogas plant runs on organic waste from kitchen and farming. Due to this, they get about one and a half hours of gas daily and the 'slurry' that comes out is used for farming. Apart from this, she does fish farming and poultry farming along with normal farming on her one acre of land.
Earn good money from Terrace Farming:
She further told that she sells all the produce she gets from the terrace in local shops and stalls in Krishi Bhawan. People living around him also come from his house and buy fruits and vegetables. Every month she earns 20 thousand rupees only from her roof. Sometimes their earnings become even more than this. Sulfat says, “Apart from earning money from rooftop farming, I am able to feed organic and pure food not only to my family but also to others. That's why I always advise people to use their roof properly.”
Sulfat Moideen says that farming is her hobby. She wants more and more people to join agriculture. For this, he also started his own YouTube channel 'Sulfath's Green Diary' so that he can help people as much as he can. On this YouTube channel, she tells about different vegetables. Along with this, they are also giving free online training to the people. She is providing this training in association with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ernakulam, and Ernakulam Social Service Society. Many people also come to see terrace farming at his house. He said, “I believe that people should move forward in the agriculture sector. Your children should be involved in agriculture. By doing agriculture, we can keep our health and that of our family good.”
She says she is proud to be her organic farmer. Sulafat Moideen has also been honored from time to time for his successful work in the agriculture sector. He has received about 42 awards at the block, district, and state-level for his work. But he gets more happiness than getting the award when people join him and start farming on the roofs of their homes.
